74-year-old retired sugarcane cutter, Mr Mahendra Prasad, travelled all the way from Koroipita Settlement, Lautoka to Ba Town seeking donations.
I receive $125 a month from the government. I use it for my medicine, food and rent.
According to him, $125 cannot sustain him for a whole month.
He carries with him a certified permit from the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development & Disaster Management. Allowing him to collect donations from the general public till December, for the purpose of buying a piece of land for his house.
I have a balance of $12 for my rent. By next Monday it'll be plus $24.
He began living in Koroipita Settlement since cyclone Winston occured in 2016. His wife had passed away and as of now, he lives alone, his two grown children living else where and pursuing further studies.
